Rory started his career in a Cornish underground tin mine in 1994, working in a vast network of tunnels almost 1,000 metres underground. As it turned out, this was one of his most interesting and exciting jobs.

Since then, Rory has led numerous tender, design and delivery teams across a range of project types and scales in New Zealand, the Pacific, Australia and the UK.Notable roles include leading the Waterview Alliance design and pricing stages, providing constructability support to the Sydney Metro West project and leading the tunnels for Watercare’s Project Hobson, a project full of New Zealand firsts.

“Project Hobson had lots of New Zealand firsts – first use of an earth pressure balance tunnelling machine, first steel fibre reinforced concrete lining. The project went exceptionally well - on time, on budget with no issues. We had a very fresh team with little experience, and many of them have gone on to have great careers in the tunnelling industry.”

In addition to his tunnelling expertise, Rory has been involved in other complex civil engineering projects including roads, bridges, pipelines, dams and ports. Applying a combination of technical expertise and commercial acumen Rory has significant experience to apply to the broadest range of projects.

Industry commitment
Rory is a founding member of the New Zealand Tunnelling Society board and a former member of the Worksafe Mining Board of Examiners and Infrastructure New Zealand board.  He has addressed international conferences in New Zealand, Australia and Canada on tunnelling best practice and tunnelling projects.

“I am a passionate advocate for the construction sector, especially tunnelling and will talk the ear off of anyone who shows the slightest interest!”

Alta
Establishing Alta with Tim and Daniel has been an important milestone. The overriding objective from the outset was to influence projects at an early stage and help customers get better outcomes for their projects.

“I genuinely believe that we are helping to improve society’s fabric for everyone. I get huge satisfaction from knowing that we are helping to do things like ease congestion, reduce flooding risks, and provide better water services to communities.”

Below are some of the projects that Rory has worked on.

  • Watercare Enterprise Model – Independent Cost Verifier
  • Sydney Metro West Preliminary Design Stage Constructability
  • Auckland Light Rail Cost Estimating and Constructability
